&diamsBrief Introduction

Dr. Nakatani entered the Department of Mechanical Engineering in Osaka University in 1984 and completed the 4-year course in 1988. Since then, he had been a Ph.D. candidate of Graduate School of Engineering in Osaka University, studying under the direction of Professor Hiroshi Kitagawa in the Laboratory of Solid Mechanics. He was granted a Master degree in 1990 and a Ph.D. degree in 1993. He has experienced Teaching Assistant, Research Associate, Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at Osaka University, and he is currently the Professor of Department of Adaptive Machine Systems in Osaka University. He obtained the 1999 fellowships for academic staff of Japanese national university by the Ministry of Education of Japan. He was invited to U.S.A. as Visiting Associate Professor (Research) in Brown University for studying with Prof. Alan Needleman. Major themes of him are microstructural modeling of deformation and mechanical properties, and proposal of a novel methodology based on simulations. He has conducted very pioneering studies of atomistic simulations in strength of materials and in a solid mechanics area. He clarified a theoretical background of the criterion for fractures in crystalline and amorphous metals by using atomistic models. He also investigated the mesoscopic phenomena near the crack tip by using a discrete dislocation dynamics. His publications seem to involve many interesting topics for quite a few scientists engaging in computational mechanics, and the series of his achievement attracting a great deal of attention in the sense of multiscale modeling which connects microscale structure with macroscopic mechanical behavior. He has also contributed to international activities such as Editorial Committee of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Volume 48 (1999), International Scientific Committee of the 5th International Seminar on Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of New Engineering Materials ; IMMM2001 (2001), Organizing Committee of International Symposia on Materials Science for the 21st Century; ISMS-21 (2001), Organizing Committee of the 2002 International Conference on Computational; ICES'02 (2002), Organizing Committee of International Symposium for Young Researchers on Modeling and Their Applications ; IA'02 (2002) , Secretary of The International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) Symposium on Mesoscopic Dynamics of Fracture Process and Materials Strength ; IUTAM 2003 Osaka (2003), Organizing Committee of the 8th Asia-Pacific Symposium on Engineering Plasticity and Its Applications; AEPA2006 Nagoya (2006).
